Making a Change
The Mediterranean Sea is a vital resource for the Maltese Islands. The sea is a source of food and water – the islands even rely on it for drinking purposes via desalination by reverse osmosis.
For the citizens of such small islands, the sea is also essential for relaxation, sports, leisure activities and entertainment, and has enormous benefits in terms of physical and mental health.
Finally, the sea is also crucial for the maritime and tourism sectors.
A high concentration of plastic in the sea, including microplastics and nano-plastics means that plastic will find its way into the food chain. Plastic waste is often mistaken for food by fish and marine mammals as well as birds.
With the Island Guardians project, Esplora Interactive Science Centre seeks to contribute to reversing this trend through education, action and prevention, for healthier seas and ecosystems.
