Learn about the REMEDIES programme’s Plastic Fantastic Hackathon!

Island Guardians Video #1

Watch our first Island Guardians video on Local Heroes in the fight against plastic pollution.

Meet Martina Cutajar from Nature Trust FEE Malta, site manager of the Ċirkewwa Marine Park!

With many thanks to Martina and the Ċirkewwa Marine Park, and to FullPhat Media for the filming and editing.

Island Guardians Video #2

In our second Island Guardians video on Local Heroes fighting against plastic pollution, we meet Professor Alan Deidun and Dr Adam Gauci from the Oceanography Malta Research Group at the University of Malta. They tell us all about their research on microplastics and the Andromeda Microplastics app.
You can be an island guardian too by using this app to analyse microplastics!

Island Guardians Video #3

In our third Island Guardians video on Local Heroes we follow clean-up pioneer Raniero Borg on his mission to clean up Maltese beaches from plastic waste and other debris.

Raniero is an experienced diver and expert at hauling out ‘the big stuff’ from the depths of the sea. He founded Raniero’s Adventures, which regularly organises beach and seabed clean-ups around Malta and Gozo.

Island Guardians Video #4

In this fourth Island Guardians video about Local Heroes we meet Andrew Schembri from the NGO Żibel, which specialises in marine protection and conservation.

The NGO is known for its professional land and seabed clean-ups. It is also responsible for the introduction of sea bins in Maltese bays and runs a number of interesting projects on repurposing waste.

Island Guardians Video #5

Last but not least, here’s the fifth Island Guardians video about the much-loved conservation NGO Sharklab Malta.

Science Officer Charlie Matthews tells us all about why it is so important to protect sharks and other elasmobranchs from the many threats they are facing, including that of plastic ingestion.
