1.6 Tonnes of Trash Removed from Exiles Beach and Seabed, Inspiring Community Conservation
Collective Action for Change
Sliema, Malta – 2nd November 2024 – The Malta Trash Hunt 2024 was a resounding success, bringing together over 140 passionate volunteers, including 78 divers and 65 beach cleanup participants, to remove an estimated 1.6 tonnes of trash from Exiles Beach and the surrounding seabed. Organized to make a direct environmental impact and foster a deeper commitment to conservation, the event demonstrated the power of collective action and environmental education.
A Vision for Education and Collaboration
The Malta Trash Hunt 2024 was the brainchild of Tom Carleer, who saw the opportunity not only to tackle pollution through a community cleanup but to inspire long-term environmental action. Unlike traditional cleanup events, Tom envisioned a day where multiple environmental agencies could come together to educate the public, raise awareness for conservation, and unite the community around a shared mission. His innovative approach turned the event into a powerful platform for learning, allowing participants to engage directly with organizations dedicated to protecting Malta’s unique environment.
Known for organizing cleanups across Malta’s coastlines and natural spaces, Żibel’s involvement was crucial to coordinating the vast team of volunteers and managing the logistics on the day.
A Powerful Community Response
The event saw an overwhelming turnout from the community, with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds uniting for this shared cause. “The enthusiasm and energy from everyone—from seasoned divers to families who joined the beach cleanup—was truly inspiring,” said Tom. “This event wasn’t just about collecting trash; it was about educating and empowering people to take action in their daily lives to protect our seas.”
The cleanup was organized in three diving waves to safely and efficiently cover different zones within the designated area, maximizing the impact of the effort.
Educational Impact and Public Engagement
Beyond the immediate cleanup, the event served as a platform for public education. Visitors engaged directly with NGOs, learning about Malta’s marine life, pollution challenges, and everyday actions they can take to reduce their environmental footprint. “Our hope is that every person who attended walked away with a stronger understanding of how they can help protect our oceans,” added Tom.
A Future Focused on Lasting Impact
The success of the Malta Trash Hunt 2024 has set the stage for future cleanups and educational initiatives. Plans are already underway for additional programs, including school visits, community talks, and ongoing volunteer cleanup days.
