Esplora Sponsors Additional Clean-ups and Microplastics Study

Sponsorships via the Island Guardians project will enable reef clean-ups and wildlife study

Esplora Interactive Science Centre, as part of Xjenza Malta, and in agreement with the Remedies Consortium, will be sponsoring two fantastic initiatives contributing to cleaner seas and marine research.

The NGO Zibel will be clearing a number of remote reefs in Malta and Gozo of debris and ghost nets, as a continuation of Project Xibka which to date has collected over 180 nets. The NGO hopes this sponsorship will help them reach the 200 net mark. All nets will be tagged, recorded and dismantled for recycling.

The second sponsorship will fund a study by the NGO Sharklab Malta, which will look into The Impact of plastic on the Longnose spurdog (Squalus blainville) and the Thornback ray (Raja clavata) in Maltese waters. The study will focus on analyzing the size, age, and sex of these species to understand how these factors influence the way they are affected by plastic pollution.

We wish our colleagues in these great organisations the best of luck and look forward to following the progress of these important initiatives!
